QR Code Print Size: The Definitive Distance Guide

By QRStatix Team Β· March 30, 2026 Β· 5 min read

The rule of thumb that never fails: scan distance Γ· 10 = minimum code size. A code scanned from 1 meter away should be at least 10 cm wide. From 5 meters (a poster across a room), 50 cm. From 25 cm (a business card in hand), 2.5 cm.

Density modifies the rule. A short URL produces a sparse, forgiving code; a full vCard produces a dense one that needs to be larger at the same distance. This is one reason to use short dynamic links for anything printed small.

Quiet zone is the silent killer: leave a margin of at least four modules of empty space around the code. Designers love bleeding codes into backgrounds β€” scanners hate it.

Material matters too: matte surfaces beat glossy (glare blinds scanners), flat beats curved (cylindrical packaging distorts modules), and high contrast beats subtle elegance every time. When in doubt, print a test sheet and scan it from the real distance in real lighting β€” our Scan Tester catches design problems, but only you can test the physical placement.
